Position Description :

The Teacher of the Deaf /HH or Early Childhood Special Educator serves a pivotal role within Clarke’s birth-3 program, conducting evaluations, providing individual SI sessions, virtually and in person and leads SI groups, such as parent/infant groups, toddler groups and parent support groups.

Clarke’s EI program uses parent coaching approach, to increase parents/caregivers capacity to use strategies and skills to support each child’s overall development, increase amplification use, and to apply listening and spoken language techniques outside of the intervention setting.

The EI teacher works closely with Clarke’s EI team of Speech Pathologists, Audiologist, OT/PT, service coordinator and other educators to support infants and toddlers who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.

This is a full time, 35 hour per week position that follows the preschool 6-week summer schedule and academic calendar Sept-June, with the possibility of flexible scheduling for any parent groups meeting outside of regular business hours.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities :

  • Provide individual and group Early Intervention special instruction and support services following each child’s learning planning and in keeping with EI regulations and Clarke’s policies and procedures.
  • Conduct evaluations following EI regulations and using appropriate tools such as standardized measures, questionnaires, parent report, and observation.
  • Support parents/caregivers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing in Clarke’s birth-3 program by providing information, resources, connection and guidance about hearing loss related topics, typical development, and Early Intervention.
  • Design a learning environment and activities for parent child and toddler groups that promote the child’s acquisition of skills in a variety of developmental areas, including cognitive processes, communication, and social interaction, that contribute to the development of auditory and spoken language skills.
  • Any other assignments or responsibilities as decided by the program director.

Other Duties :

Meetings

  • Child specific meetings, including IFSP meetings, parent meetings, and team meetings.
  • Internal meetings such as department meetings, staff meetings, and Focus Groups
  • Participate in trainings, workshops, conferences, and other professional development

Reports and Documentation

  • Early Intervention required documentation such as session notes, logs, progress reports, and evaluations.
  • Attendance monitoring
  • Non-EI, virtual session documentation
  • IFSP goals
Requirements:

Education, licenses, certifications, skills and experience

  • NYS certification in Deaf/HH Education or Early Childhood Special Education certification
  • Bachelors or master’s degree in Deaf/HH Education preferred
  • Experience working with young children and families, preferred
  • Commitment to Clarke’s mission and the listening and spoken language approach required
  • Interest in learning about and obtaining LSL Cert AVT or AVEd. certification
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
